So this should be fun. To build the walls and benches for the insaka (meeting place) that we are constructing at Linda Community School, we need some rubbish. Specifically, we need approximately 4,000 empty plastic drinks bottles. When stuffed with other rubbish like biscuit and sweets wrappers they become solid and can be used as ‘eco-bricks’. This environmentally friendly approach to construction was part of the reason our project was the runner up for The Worshipful Company of Engineers’ 2024 Engineering Outreach Award. Today our trustee John explained the idea to the senior end of the school and announced a competition, with prizes for the pupil in each Grade who produces the most bottles, as well as a class prize for the Grade with the biggest total. There will be a lot less litter around Linda by the end of the week!
